TIFANNI’S TRENDS

- Near Collision: Near Collisions are currently trending up by 33%.

- Other Concern: Drivers should be driving with both hands and avoiding distractions while driving. This is trending up by a whopping 300%.

- Driving Distracted: We are trending down in this category by 69%.

- Other Violation: This will be the video a driver receives if they are stopping past the white intersection line. We are no longer trending in this category.

- Cell Handheld Observed: Handheld observed is trending up by 50% currently. This one is such an easy fix. Let’s see if we can knock it off the list all together.

Safety Tip - From one of our Junction City Drivers.... Make sure you do not put yourself into crush or pinch points between the dock, the trailer or another driver backing in or pulling out of a parking spot at the terminals. Make sure to make eye contact with your fellow drivers if you're going to be walking around their equipment so that they understand that you are on the ground. Always wear your high visibility vests inside active terminals.

Healthy Tip

Breakfast is the most important meal of the day. Some healthy and simple breakfast ideas for truck drivers include oatmeal, fresh fruit, protein bars, or a mixture of different breakfast foods. Some OTR drivers suggest eating a larger breakfast, and then smaller portions throughout the rest of the day to stay healthy while avoiding hunger.

Open Insurance Enrollment

Open enrollment is March 1. We will be emailing information out to all of you on our new insurance policy. We will be looking at a 0 deductible to eliminate the need for a secondary under Colonial. This will be a better plan for everyone.

We are still going to be with our current insurance Broker, Tim Williams.

Please be AWARE:

When pulling a trailer off the dock door, make sure the last thing you do is check that the trailer door is shut and sealed.

Policy for Excessive Trailer Height : Go into linehaul and if no help there, then call your manager ASAP. Please get pictures of them.

Cold Weather - Make sure you have everything and all essentials needed for cold weather.

‘Healthy Tip’ for a great start to 2024

While most people will be hitting the gym a few more times or cutting out some unhealthy habits, for truck drivers that can be a bit challenging. For the coming year, here are the top 10 New Year’s resolutions for Truck Drivers.

1. Be more active

Being on the road can make it difficult to get a good workout in. Advanced Career Institute <https://advanced.edu/blog/6-easy-exercises-truckers/> recommends avoiding potential health risks, truckers should "exercise at least 15 minutes a day". Some ways to take initiative are to bring some light weights and other workout equipment with you. Things like dumbbells, exercise bands, or even bringing a bike are great ways to get a quick workout in while waiting for a load or taking a break. Here are a few exercises <https://www.ctctrucking.com/post/best-truck-driver-healthy-choices-workouts> that are recommended for truck drivers.

2. Make smarter food decisions

Just like exercising, having access to healthy foods is more difficult for truckers than others. Although fast food and restaurants are convenient, they are not the only choices. Pack healthy snacks to take with you on the road and plan out some meals that you can easily heat up or make in your truck. Traveling for hundreds of miles every day makes grocery shopping difficult, but more and more truck stops are adding healthier options for those passing through.

3. Prioritize your mental health

Spending days on end on the road can be lonely. The National Library of Medicine <https://pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/22757596/> states that 27.9% of truckers are affected by feelings of loneliness, 26.9% are affected by depression, 20.6% experiences constant sleep disturbances, and 14.5% experience anxiety. High stress jobs and isolation can contribute to declining psychiatric health, so going into the New Year remember to help yourself and seek help when needed.

4. Learn a new hobby

Along with loneliness, boredom is also something that drivers can experience. Finding things to listen to can be enough for some, but many are looking for new things to dedicate their time to. Try finding something to fill your downtime that isn't something you typically do. Take up photography, learn to knit, or find new recipes to try out are just some options for venturing into new territories.

5. Prioritize safety

Be proactive with your truck's maintenance. It never hurts to get everything looked over and get into the habit of doing it yourself more often. While you're at it, quiz yourself on the safety procedures for pre and post inspections.

6. Read more

So much of people's lives are spent in front of a screen, or for a driver on the road. While podcasts and radio stations are good time-passers, sometimes drivers need more mental stimulation. Bring a book or two with you and try to read it in your downtime. 7. Stay connected with family

Many drivers are leaving their family's when they go deliver a load; long-haul drivers can be out for weeks at a time. Here's a reminder to reach out to family and maybe a long-lost friend.

8. Get better sleep

Like mentioned previously, sleep can be a real challenge for truck drivers. Finding somewhere to rest for the night, or even a place to pull off when feeling tired can be stressful and near impossible. Being away from home and unfamiliar locations can contribute to a lack of sleep, as well as stress and fatigue. When thinking about mental and physical health, sleep should not be overlooked.

9. Keep things clean and organized

Your truck is your home-away-from-home. Keep it clean, and other problems might disappear. Get a truck organizer or a paperwork binder for all those important documents. Decluttering and clearing space can drastically improve sleep patterns, reduce stress, improve mental health, and make you more productive.

10. Take care of yourself

Truck drivers are at a higher risk to health problems with the main risk being heart disease. Lack of exercise and unhealthy meals can lead to obesity, increased blood pressure, and lower energy levels.

While New Year’s Resolutions can be intimidating or even stressful for some, making small changes can improve your overall health and happiness. Going into January, let 2024 be the best year yet for you.

Safety Tip from Terry Smith

When unhooking and uncoupling sets of trailers, always reach under the trailers to pull the release by using a 5th wheel puller. Never reach under and grab it with your hand and pull. Reaching under and doing it by hand is the number one way to tear your rotator cuff and cause an injury that requires surgery.

Fact: You are 23 time more likely to crash your CMV when you text while driving. You are also six times more likely to cause an accident when dialing your cell phone.

Safety tip

The two conditions most likely to impact the safety of drivers on the road are traffic and bad weather. Heavy traffic causes vehicles to constantly stop and go, which increases the likelihood of truck accidents.

Don’t be complacent just because the weather is nice! Just remember Labor Day is coming up!

Always buckle up.

Whether you’re behind the wheel or a passenger, always wear your seat belt while riding in a vehicle. Seat belts can help save your life or reduce the severity of sustained injuries if you’re involved in a car crash. In 2017, seat belts helped to save close to 15,000 lives.

If you see a drunk driver on the road, call 911. If you suspect someone is driving drunk (e.g., driving erratically, driving too fast or too slowly), notify the authorities by calling 911. You’ll want to give them the name of the road or major intersection that the impaired driver is traveling on, as well as the direction in which they’re driving. Another dangerous driving error is wrong way where a driver is driving in the wrong direction. This usually happens on highways, where a driver gets on an off-ramp. The NTSB reports that impaired driving is the number one cause of wrong-way driving. If you see wrong-way driving, drive on the most right-hand side of the road, stop at a safe place (e.g., a gas station), and then call 911.

Safety Training – Please don’t forget KTI’s policy on NOT getting your safety training done monthly. From the handbook…

(Any driver with overdue Safety Training will lose their safety bonus for 4 weeks and will not be allowed to dispatch until the safety training is completed.)

Safety is IMPORTANT! - Fatal Crashes are rising and not wearing a seat belt is a key contributing factor. Wear your seat belt every time you drive or ride. Seat belts can save lives, reduce injury, and allow drivers to

stay inside and control their vehicle in the event of a crash.

Defensive driving.

Practice defensive driving is one of the most effective approaches to

safe driving. Defensive driving is a set of skills that allow drivers to

defend themselves against possible collisions caused by bad drivers,

distracted drivers, drunk drivers, and poor weather.

June was a HOT one!!! I know a lot of you are taking vacation time this summer so be sure and stay hydrated and enjoy your time! For everyone else, it’s been a great month!

PLEASE REMEMBER …………. No personal use of any KTI tractor or out of route miles unless approved by KTI management.

Vacation Payout – We’d like to remind all that if you haven’t taken your vacation time within the year, we will be paying that out to you. You are given a week’s vacation on your year anniversary.

Safety Meeting – We are working toward providing our safety meetings through our Paychex portal that all of you currently have available to you. This will give us the access to keep a log on when you get on there and watch them. We will be getting more information out to you soon with the details and instructions.

SAFETY IS IMPORTANT……

Keep Lane changes to a minimum-

Pick a lane and stay in it, the odds of an accident increases dramatically each time a vehicle makes a move to another lane.

When you do have to make a lane change do so very carefully while being aware of your blind spots and constantly check your mirrors.

Driving a truck doesn’t have to burn you out mentally and physically. When you have some downtime, let go of the steering wheel and make sure to connect with yourself and your loved ones.

Take care of your mental health

Always be mindful of how you feel emotionally.

This might sound obvious or cliche, but your mental health impacts your ability to focus and operate your truck safely.

If you feel overwhelmed or lonely, contact someone. This could be another truck driver, a colleague, a mental health provider, or a family member.

Truck driving can be a stressful, lonely job. It’s always ok to ask for help when you need it.

Bringing a pet on the road can also be a big source of companionship. Long hours can lead to loneliness, and traveling with a pet of any kind can help improve your mood. It’s also a great conversation starter at rest areas!

VACATION POLICY – Please email Karla Kilgore at karlakilgore3@gmail.com when needing to request time off for vacation. She will get with the appropriate manager on getting approval for that time needed.

NEW TIME-OFF POLICY – Update on our policy……. Vacation can be requested at any time during the year. DO NOT forget that we have blackout dates from November until January 15. Priority will be giving to all vacation time off request 2 months in advanced.

Any unpaid time off request will only be taken for up to 2 months out. If you take off during the week of your run, there is a possibility that we will have to move you to have someone cover your run. If we do have to move you off your run, extra work will be assigned to you as needed.

401K – It’s that time of the year that if you are eligible for our 401K program that you should have received an email from us. Work Zone Safety:

Work zones can present many hazards, such as lane shifts, sudden stops, uneven roads and or

surfaces, moving road workers and equipment and more.

Unfortunately, fatal work zones crashes continue to rise each year- so work zone safety needs

to be taken very seriously.

Slow down and maintain extra following space, be prepared to stop, and obey all work sone

signals and signs. Scan ahead for changing traffic patterns and be alert to any vehicles entering

blind spots and keep a sharp eye out for road workers and or flag crews.

6 Tips for Staying Healthy

1. Eat clean.

Next time you stop at a convenience store, consider grabbing some almonds rather than a candy bar; a chicken caesar salad rather than a hot dog. By substituting high preservative foods and red meat for lean protein and clean carbs.

A very popular way to eat healthy while also saving money is to prepare your meals ahead of time. Rather than relying on stores across the country that don’t always have the most nutritious options, fully complement your diet with a home-cooked dish. If your commercial truck has a refrigerator, you can store up to seven days’ worth of meals.

2. Wear sunscreen.

Summer is upon us, and your skin demands sunscreen. Standard truck side windows do not protect your face from ultraviolet (UV) A radiation. Factor in the up to 70-hour workweek that OTR truck drivers have, and you can see how quickly the sun exposure adds up.

Use a broad-spectrum UVA sunscreen for maximum protection from premature skin aging.

3. Avoid driver burnout.

No matter the job, we are all prone to burnout – but it’s especially important that truck drivers don’t overwork themselves. Since the trucking and shipping industry is 24/7, it is very likely you have an irregular schedule to meet the on-demand needs of dispatchers.

Seven hours of sleep is recommended to be fully alert for the day. While you may not always be able to get a full night’s rest, here are some proactive pointers to improve the quality of your sleep:

· Block light from coming into your cab.

· Cancel out traffic noise with earbuds.

· Reduce your screen time before bed.

· Don’t eat before going to bed.

4. Stay hydrated.

Everyone should drink a half-gallon of water per day in order to stay hydrated, leaving you more energized and alert. You might even see weight loss benefits.

5. Exercise regularly.

After a long day behind the wheel, you may be tempted to relax. Instead, spend 15 minutes taking a brisk walk or stretching. You’ll feel rejuvenated by the fresh air and decompressed from the confines of your truck seat.

6. Improve your posture.

When all is said and done, your truck is your office where you spend most of your time. Lower back pain and sciatica are premature career killers that you can prevent.

Some foods you can include in your diet:

• Vegetables

• Leafy greens and salads

• Green drink

APRIL SHOWERS BRING MAY FLOWERS! Some things to be aware of…………

Drive slower in wet conditions. At higher speeds, your tires are more likely to lose contact with wet surfaces.
Disable cruise control on wet roads. If you start hydroplaning, it will take additional time for you to turn off this function and slow down to regain control of your vehicle.
Always pay attention to the road surface. Keep an eye out for puddles and wet areas, which tend to form along the edge of the roadway. If it has been raining, choose lanes that are in the center of the pavement.
Drive in the tracks of the vehicles in front of you. The tires of other vehicles ahead will displace a lot of the surface water and reduce the likelihood of your tires losing traction.

Distracted driving has become a deadly epidemic on our roads. Cell phone use — specifically, texting, talking, and social media use — has become the most common distraction. Other risky actions include adjusting the radio or GPS, applying makeup, eating and drinking. By driving distracted, you’re robbing yourself of seconds that you may need to avoid a close call or deadly crash.

Drive Responsibly

In 2022 distracted driving killed more than 40,000 people. April, which is national Distracted Driving Awareness Month, is a good time to regroup and take responsibility for the choices we make when we’re on the road. Follow these safety tips for a safe ride:

Need to send a text? Pull over and park your car in a safe location.
Designate your passenger as your “designated texter” to respond to calls or messages.
Do not scroll through apps while driving. Struggling not to text and drive? Put the cell phone in the trunk, glove box, or back seat of the vehicle until you arrive at your destination.

Driving can be stressful at times, so it’s important to find ways to relieve stress.

First, figure out what causes you stress.

Second, try to manage your stress when it occurs. Find ways to distract yourself: If you can get out of your truck, go for a short walk, and get some sun. If you’re driving, listen to your favorite music.

Make relaxation a habit, too. When at home, make time to do the hobbies you enjoy, which will help you unwind.

Not sure if everyone got my email with the insurance updates. Here is a recap of that.

First, this is information on your vision insurance if you are opting to take this through Knowlton Trucking.

Attention all employees. Please go to vsp.com and make sure you are on the members tab. Then in the upper right corner please click login/create an account. Then follow the instructions on creating an account. If for any reason you are not able to create an account within 24 hours, please let me know so I can check your login credentials with VSP.

Second, here are the instructions to log into your insurance portal if you are opting to take medical insurance through Knowlton Trucking.

Go to www.alliedbenefit.com. For your initial login, you will select “REGISTER.”
Proceed to enter the required information into “WEBSITE ACCOUNT REQUEST" with your personal information. Your “Group number” begins with an L followed by 6 numbers and can be found on your ID Card or obtained from your employer.
Then click the “SUBMIT” button, and you will receive account information to the e‐mail address provided.

Third, you will need to log into Colonial Life to get any voluntary coverage (dental) information you have elected to take. ColonialLife.com You can also print copies of your dental insurance cards.

HEALTHY TIP – Impaired performance from lack of sleep mimics alcohol intoxication.

Being awake for 17 hours is like having a blood alcohol concentration (BAC) of 0.05% (the level some countries use for drunk driving violations).

Being awake for 24 hours is like having a BAC of 0.10% (above the U.S. drunk driving level of 0.08.

Drivers should make a sleep plan to ensure they get enough sleep before their run.

ONLINE SAFETY TRAINING

FedEx requires contractors to enroll their drivers into an online safety training course for insurance purposes. In the event of an accident, Knowlton Trucking’s deductible is affected by the status of the Driver’s Safety training at the time of the accident:

•Deductible for up-to-date Safety Training- $2,000

•Deductible for Overdue Safety Training- $75,000

Any driver with overdue Safety Training will lose their safety bonus for 4 weeks and will not be allowed to dispatch until the safety training is completed.

Traveling multiple car lengths behind the vehicle in front, it was obvious the driver intentionally maintained a safe stopping distance

“BETTER TOGETHER” –Doesn’t that sound great when you think about Knowlton Trucking. I was able to visit with Tim Perkins this month. What a great conversation we had on ways to keep everyone positive and motivated. He has asked to challenge our drivers to call one of our managers and just have something positive to share with them this month. Let’s see how many of you can take on this challenge!!!

Continually check all mirrors while backing. Perform a walk- around. Walk around the vehicle before backing it and after it has been parked for a while. Look for children, animals, soft or muddy areas, potholes, tire hazards, or other possible dangers.

INSURANCE – We are officially going with a new insurance carrier effective in March during our Enrollment time. A representative will be coming to you and sitting down and helping you with your enrollment process. There will also be life insurance options.

WEBSITE UPDATE - KTI is updating our Knowltontrucking.com website. We would still love for you to send us videos and testimonials to be placed on the site of why YOU like working at KTI. KTI is also working to create a blog, so we can also post the newsletter and any other important information to the site. FUEL CARDS – We are so excited to be getting out our new fuel cards to everyone. We will be getting these to you the first week of January. You will be hearing more about this from you managers.

SAFETY IS IMPORTANT - When weather is below 15 degrees fuel treatment is important. Please get with your manager if you are needing any additional amounts in your trucks. It is essential to make sure your trucks are plugged in when the temperatures are near or below freezing. Let your manager know if you are needing an extension cord for your truck.

HEALTHY TIP -

One can of Coke is 140 calories. Over the course of a year, one soda a day would equal a total of 51,100 calories. You must burn about 3,500 calories to lose one pound of fat. Dividing 51,100 calories by 3,500 (one pound of fat) equals 14.5 pounds a person will save over the course of a year by eliminating one can of soda per day from their diet.

I hope everyone had a great November. We are continuing into another very busy month. We hope that the Newsletters are helping to keep you informed and up to date on all that’s going on with Knowlton Trucking!

SAFETY IS IMPORTANT……

When logging into your ELD to start your day,allow the ELD’s to fully load your information to avoid any unnecessary violations that occur from starting too early and messing up 10hourbreaks and 34-hour resets.

Weather Conditions

Check the weather before leaving for your run. In the event of severe weather, alternate routing may be available. In the event you do

encounter bad weather, it is up to you to decide if you are comfortable with continuing the run. In cases of extreme weather, KTI management will preemptively make the determination to cancel the run. If your run is cancelled

and you would still like to work, get with your manager who will work with FedEx to find addition work that is not affected by severe weather.

Look out for Deer

Deer are more active during the colder months

Wear weather appropriate clothing.

Wearing shorts during freezing weather may cause you to rush your pre-trip and miss something important. Not wearing the right kind of

footwear may cause you slip.

Fill up on fuel at the end of your run.

When the fuel tanks are half full/almost empty then condensation can form and get water in the tank.

INSURANCE - We are looking at possibly switching our insurance providers to a more affordable one. Hopefully everyone got their employee eligibility form filled out and sent back. We will keep you updated as we know more.
